Dr. Sampson conducts community-based research to study social and physical environments and their effects on health inequities. To this end, she works to bring interdisciplinary evidence to climate change, land use, and infrastructure planning efforts in Detroit and Southeast Michigan. Dr. Sampson is a steering committee member of the Detroit Climate Action Collaborative and the Community Action to Promote Healthy Environments and works closely with the statewide Michigan Environmental Justice Coalition. She co-chairs the American Public Health Association’s Environmental Justice Subcommittee.
Sampson is also interested in the scholarship of teaching and learning and has previously worked as a teaching consultant at University of Michigan’s Center for Research on Learning and Teaching. She aims to improve the experience of first generation, working class, and low-income college students. Through applied research with the College and University Pantry (CUP) team, she particularly examines and uplifts the role of campus food pantries in addressing student food insecurity. At University of Michigan-Dearborn, Dr. Sampson teaches courses in public health, health education, environmental health, and community organizing.
