Clinical Assistant Professor of Law, Workers' Rights Clinic

Rachael Kohl directs the Michigan Law School’s Workers’ Rights Clinic (formerly the Unemployment Insurance Clinic).

Prior to joining the Law School faculty, Kohl was an attorney with the civil rights and employment law firm of Pitt McGehee Palmer & Rivers, PC. She worked on a variety of cases, including the firm’s ongoing class action lawsuits against Michigan’s Unemployment Insurance Agency. As part of her role managing the class actions, she interviewed and reviewed hundreds of individual claimants’ cases. She also represented many claimants individually to protest and appeal the agency’s determinations.

Additionally, Kohl’s practice included handling individual discrimination and retaliation lawsuits based on age, national origin, sex, race, disability, and sexual harassment, as well as violations of the Whistleblower Protection Act, the Family Medical Leave Act, and the Fair Labor Standards Act. Prior to joining the firm, Kohl maintained her own practice, which included representing claimants in unemployment hearings alongside the Sugar Law Center for Economic and Social Justice in Detroit.
