Jana L. Hirschtick is a research investigator in the Center for Social Epidemiology and Population Health in U-M’s School of Public Health. As a social epidemiologist, she is interested in quantifying health inequities and examining how policy and social factors, such as neighborhood environment, discrimination, and poverty, impact these inequities. Prior to joining the University of Michigan, she worked as a social epidemiologist for eight years at a safety net hospital in Chicago focused on community-driven research and health care.

Hirschtick is co-investigator of the University of Michigan Tobacco Center of Regulatory Science and the Center for the Assessment of Tobacco and Health (CAsToR), which is one of nine sites in the nation awarded by the Food and Drug Administration and National Institutes of Health to conduct research to directly inform FDA regulation of tobacco products. She is examining inequities in tobacco product use and related health effects, with a particular focus on polytobacco use (the use of multiple tobacco products).  Hirschtick also is a co-investigator on the Michigan COVID-19 Recovery Surveillance Study (MI CReSS), a representative survey of confirmed positive adult COVID-19 cases in Michigan conducted in partnership with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
