Christian Sandvig’s research focuses on new information and communication technologies and inequality. His prior work studied the potential for new wireless networks on US Indian Reservations, the differential use of the electromagnetic spectrum in poor vs. rich neighborhoods, and the use of social media by adolescents in rural housing projects. His current projects focus on the role of “black-boxed” algorithmic decision systems in media and information that may produce cumulative disadvantage and discrimination via decisions about employment, housing, and access to information. Sandvig was named a “next-generation leader in science and technology policy” by the American Association for the Advancement of Science and his group blog was named one of the “Must-Follow Feeds” in science, culture, and design by Wired. He previously received the Faculty Early Career Development Award from the US National Science Foundation (NSF CAREER) in the area of Human-Centered Computing.
