Joe Grengs’s research focuses on transportation planning and how metropolitan land-use patterns contribute to uneven economic development and social inequalities. His research argues for prioritizing transportation investments that improve access to essential destinations for poor people and other disadvantaged travelers. His work develops spatial analysis approaches for comparing how the effects of transportation policy are experienced differently by race, ethnicity, gender, age, and income. His research has examined the spatial effects of poverty concentration, the social disadvantages that poor people face when without cars, how recent trends in public/private partnerships undermine legally mandated social equity goals, and how social movements have succeeded in making policy changes for people who depend on public transit. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) and a registered professional engineer. He was appointed by the Obama Administration and currently serves on the Federal Advisory Committee on Transportation Equity at the U.S. Department of Transportation.
